Description

Upper and lower jaws of a male African lion are cast in durable urethane resin. Jaw measurements: width = 5 1/2″ = 13cm (as measured across the rear molar teeth at the widest point), length = 5 3/4″ = 14.5 cm (as measured from the incisors to the last molar tooth). Only the upper jaw (palate) measurements are given. This set of jaws was molded from a un-cleaned lion skull and all of the detail of the gums and palate have been captured. This would be great for mask making, fursuits, puppets or any application where you need a ready to go part (the cast will need some prep work if you are going to paint it, see below), or just for educational use or taxidermy reference. The cast could also be used for a taxidermy jawset once painted. Tongues (which is shown in one of the pictures but is not included) are commercially available that would fit this jawset – I would suggest the medium sized Mohr brand lion tongue, which can be found for sale by many taxidermy supply companies. The site taxidermy.net has a large listing of suppliers all over the world. The mold was taken directly from a real skull, and is detailed down to the pores and texture of the bone. It also includes a portion of the jaw bone. Please note – the cast has been filled with yellow urethane foam for added stability; this can easily be trimmed and shaped as desired. It also readily accepts hot glue. These casts are also paintable – however you will need to lightly scuff the surface with a steel wool, fine grain sanding pad or scouring pad in order to get good paint adhesion. I got good results with scuffing, wiping with denatured alcohol and then priming with the spray can automotive-type primer available in stores. Then it can be painted with virtually any type of paint.
